If it seems like everyone around you is anxious about college applications, that’s probably because they are! Luckily, so much of that anxiety can be squashed if you have a good grasp on the right timeline for your child’s (your) college applications, and you take time to breathe along the way. Here’s a quick timeline of what you might consider each year in the lead up to actually filling out a college application.
Ninth Grade:
You’re a long cry from actually filling out the Common Application, but you can still be thinking about making the application process as stress-free as possible!
- Working with your parents and your guidance or college counselor, plan your four year course of study. Take into consideration what you might want to do after high school as you do this, but also allow for flexibility in case your plans change.
- Get involved in things you like to do: extracurriculars, volunteer work, etc.
- Start to notice how you like to learn: do you prefer small courses or big ones?
- Put some thought into what helps you to remain calm and grounded. Having a mindfulness practice, even if it’s just for a few minutes a day, will prepare you for the stress of application season!
