Should You Work While Studying for the NCLEX®?

🚨It’s a question many newly graduated student nurses wrestle with - and for good reason. On one hand, having a job, especially in a healthcare setting, can help reinforce the concepts you’re learning and give you real-world context for the types of questions you'll face on the exam. It also offers a source of income, which can reduce financial stress and provide a sense of stability during a time that often feels anything but. Some students even say that maintaining a work schedule gives their days structure and keeps them motivated to stay on top of their study goals.
But here’s the flip side: preparing for the NCLEX® is no small task. It demands focus, energy, and a consistent study routine. Balancing work, especially full-time hours, with quality prep can leave you stretched thin and exhausted. I remember when I was preparing for the NCLEX myself, I had started working full-time at a local hospital, thinking I could handle both. At first, it felt manageable, but as my test date got closer, the fatigue and stress began to build. I had to make the tough decision to step back from work temporarily, and in hindsight, it was the best choice I made. It gave me the space to focus fully on my prep and go into the exam with a clear head.
If you're thinking about working while preparing for the exam, be honest with yourself. Consider the kind of job you have, your support system, and how much time you realistically need to study. Sometimes stepping back from work, even for a short time, is the best investment in your future.
