Balancing Prep and College: The Essential Practice for Future Physicians

Preparing for the MCAT while managing college life is no small feat, but as future physicians, it’s crucial to remember that balance is necessary. We can’t put our lives on hold each time we do something hard. Think of this as a great opportunity to practice a skill you will 100% need in the future.

With that being said, here are four very essential tips to help you find that balance:

Consistency over Intensity

It’s not about how much you can study in one sitting, it's about how often. A little studying once a day is much more effective than cramming in one long session on the weekend. Even 30 minutes of dedicated, serious studying can build serious momentum over time. Remember, the MCAT is a marathon, not a sprint.

Love Yourself

This one seems very obvious, but it is very easy to forget about your general well-being while studying for the MCAT. Prioritize sleep, exercise, eating, and your social connections. If you neglect your basic needs, your mental and physical health will decline, and that will only make studying harder. Taking care of yourself isn’t separate from MCAT prep; it is part of MCAT prep.

Boundaries Make You Better

Study time and personal time both deserve their place. When you’re studying, focus fully. When you’re not, allow yourself to fully rest. Boundaries prevent burnout, increase productivity, and help you stay present in every part of your life.

Let Your Classes Work For You

Your MCAT prep doesn’t have to be a completely separate beast from your coursework. In fact, your classes and professors can be one of your best study tools. Whenever possible, align your MCAT studying with what you’re already learning in school.
