As a former hiring manager who often interviewed high schoolers and graduates, I've seen how intimidating it can be for high schoolers to apply or interview with “no experience."  But did you know that many of the skills your high schooler currently possesses or is learning in high school directly translate to the workforce?

I was reading this article by Milton Hershey School, and out of their list of 8 employability skills that prepare High Schoolers for the workforce, this is one that stood out the most to me as a former hiring manager.

  • Working with a team: Some of my best high school hires have been candidates who played team sports or have held positions in clubs (like president of the culinary club, for example). There are foundational values that are instilled through team sports and clubs that are key in any workplace like:
  • cooperating
  • sharing responsibilities
  • supporting your teammates
  • learning to work and navigate different personalities and roles within a group
  • and working towards a common goal

What other skills stood out to you from the list?
