A couple of things come to mind for what worked for our family…

1. Don't wait until the last minute to start. Dive in now so you have plenty of time to see how the app works. You also need to identify where you want to apply and see if the Common App works or if you must do a separate direct application.

2. Don't overapply because it's easy…make sure the schools you apply to are a financial fit…otherwise it's going to be a rocky road when you have to say no because your family can't swing the tuition

3. Juggling applying and all that senior year brings…come up with a timeline that works with your family's schedule. Don't stray from the schedule. Be aware of falling behind. You'll feel so much better knowing this part of the process is finished.

4. If you do nothing else right now…look at the essay topics so you can start thinking about your answers.

5. Establish a regular family check-in…Saturday nights worked for us. This way, I didn't put too much pressure on my son by constantly asking…"Did you do _____ yet." We all knew we'd discuss it on Saturday. Having that established time also helped him make progress every week.
