Questions Regarding Breaks During the MCAT
MCAT Student
🔬I have a few questions regarding the scheduled breaks during the MCAT.
First, when we reach the end of a section (for example, CHEM/PHYS), does the ten-minute timer immediately start counting down? Or do we have to select "Yes" to wanting to take our break, and then the timer starts?
Also, if we have to select "Yes" to start the timer, should we select "Yes" to start the break before raising our hand for a test administrator to come dismiss us, or should we wait to be dismissed by a test administrator and then select "Yes?"
I want to make sure I am following the appropriate procedure. The Kaplan full-lengths seem to start an automatic timer when I finish a section, but the AAMC full-lengths give me an option to click "Yes" or "No" before a break, and I was wondering which scenario I will see on test day.
Also, when we want to switch out our note boards between sections, can we give old ones back as we exit the room for breaks and get new ones as we re-enter the room following breaks?
Thank you!

Hi Emily. The timer will start automatically once you've reached the end of the section. Once you're in the break, I would raise your hand so that the test administrator knows to escort you for your break. If necessary, they will assist you with the buttons to press. The AAMC FLs give you the option because it's a practice test and not test day. For swapping out your noteboard, you'll want to raise your hand to ask for a new one. I'm not sure if you can do it at the same time you leave and re-enter the room though. I would suggest you call your local testing center to get some more information on these specifics. Hope that helps!
