So far we've talked about Who You Are, What You Do, and Where You Are.
Step 4 will focus on Why You're Interested in Medicine.
Clearly articulating why you want to devote your life to this career is paramount to a powerful application.
It's not enough to simply state your desire to become a doctor.
You need to have concrete insights into the profession and a vision for what you'd like to achieve.
Drawing upon the steps we've covered till now, think about the following questions:
- Why do you want to become a physician?
- Why is this the right job for you?
- What skills and opportunities will you have as a doctor that you won't in another profession?
- What goals would you like to accomplish in this role?
- Do you enjoy studying science?
- What was your favorite science course and why?
- What are your greatest scientific accomplishments?
- Do you enjoy solving problems?
- Think of a time you solved a problem as a leader
- Think of a time you solved a problem as a team member
- Do you enjoy helping others?
- Think of a time you made another person’s life better
- Think of a time you made a community's life better
Your answers to these questions will help shape and personalize your application.
