If you have yet to receive your first acceptance, the "waiting game" can be incredibly frustrating and disheartening, as each day goes by without a definitive answer.

While schools will continue to extend new acceptances as openings occur, I recommend setting a specific date (one only you can determine) after which you should start preparing your reapplication. This will enable you to submit a polished and updated application in late May, when AMCAS begins accepting applications for the 2027 entering class. Additionally, this plan will help you take proactive steps to regain a sense of control of your situation—especially if, like many applicants, you’re currently feeling a lack of control.

Before deciding whether to apply in the upcoming cycle, take some time for self-reflection. Are there areas in your application that could and should be strengthened?

You don’t, and often shouldn’t, try to do this alone. Seek advice from a trusted advisor, such as a faculty member or mentor. If you don’t have someone familiar with the medical school admissions process to consult, consider scheduling one or two hours to meet with a Kaplan Medical School Admissions Consultant for an objective review of your application and strategic advice. One important point: preparing to reapply and submitting a new application will not harm your chances for your current application.

Your application doesn't require a complete overhaul, but it does need some updates.

Be sure to refresh your activities and, at a minimum, revise your personal statement to reflect the past year. If you plan to ask the same individuals for letters of recommendation, encourage them to include any new insights they may have. Even if they don’t have additional details to share, it’s still important for them to update their letter with a current date, so medical schools can see that they still believe in your potential as a future doctor.

To maximize your chances of being admitted to medical school through the rolling admissions process, aim to submit your AMCAS, AACOMAS, or TMDSAS application as soon as that primary application service opens for submission in May. Below is our recommended timeline designed to help you submit early, ensuring high quality and reduced stress. Adjust the schedule to fit your individual circumstances.

For specific application deadline dates, visit the AMCAS (MD schools), AACOMAS (DO schools), and TMDSAS (Texas medical schools) websites.
