To maximize your chances of being admitted to medical school through the rolling admissions process, aim to submit your AMCAS, AACOMAS, or TMDSAS application as soon as that primary application service opens for submission in May. Below is our recommended timeline designed to help you submit early, ensuring high quality and reduced stress. Adjust the schedule to fit your individual circumstances.

For specific application deadline dates, visit the AMCAS (MD schools), AACOMAS (DO schools), and TMDSAS (Texas medical schools) websites.

Medical School Application Timeline

January - April

  • If available, register with your school’s pre-health advising committee.
  • Request and obtain recommendation letters
  • Take your MCAT.
  • Consult the MSAR or individual school websites to confirm each medical school’s specific requirements.
  • Brainstorm, outline, and write your personal statement(s).
  • Brainstorm, outline, and write your Work and Activities entries.

May

  • Once you have opened your AMCAS, AACOMAS, or TMDSAS application and obtained your applicant ID #, order official transcripts using each application service’s transcript request form from every college and university you have attended.
  • Submit your application(s)
  • If applying through AACOMAS or TMDSAS, release your MCAT scores to them.
  • Remind recommendation letter writers to send their LOR if they haven’t already
  • Register for the AAMC PREview exam
  • Register for the Acuity Insights exams (Casper/Snapshot/Duet)
  • After you have submitted your primary application, begin pre-writing secondary application essays for the schools to which you are applying. You can find schools’ previous secondary prompts here.
  • Ensure that AMCAS and other application systems have received your transcripts. Don’t assume your primary application is complete until you receive an email or other notification confirming it.

June - August

  • Ensure that AMCAS and other application systems have received your letters of recommendation. Don’t assume your letters of recommendation have been received until you receive confirmation. The primary application service will forward your letters of recommendation to the schools you have identified. Your secondary application at each school will not be complete until they receive your completed secondary application, including your letters of recommendation.
  • Submit secondary applications promptly, but ensure quality is maintained.

September - April

  • Prepare for and complete interviews.

October - May

  • Review admission and financial aid offers.
  • Attend second look and admit weekend activities.
  • Select a program to attend.
