Hi, my name is Maria Lofftus, a Medical School Admissions Consultant here at Kaplan.

First, take a moment to look back at where you were last year. You’ve accomplished so much since then—be proud of your progress! As we move into the next phase of the cycle, here is what you need to know about the upcoming AMCAS deadlines and the "quiet period."

Why Acceptances Slow Down in Mid-March

If you are currently on an alternate list (waitlist), you might notice a lull in activity. This is due to specific AAMC traffic rules:

  • March 15 Deadline: AMCAS medical schools are required to have issued enough acceptance offers to fill their first-year class by this date.
  • The "Holding" Period: Between now and mid-April, applicants can hold an unlimited number of acceptances. This makes schools cautious about sending new offers until the "seat "count stabilizes.
  • April 15: Applicants must narrow their choices to three acceptances.
  • April 30: This is the critical "Plan to Enroll" deadline where applicants must narrow their choice to one school.

Note:

These rules specifically apply to

AMCAS

schools. AACOMAS (Osteopathic) and TMDSAS (Texas) follow their own distinct procedures and timelines.

When Will the Waitlist Move?

In my experience as an admissions dean, the "quiet period" is just the calm before the storm.

Once the April 30 deadline passes, the movement begins again. In fact, roughly 25% of total acceptances are often offered between late April and the start of classes. If you are on an alternate list, the school is essentially saying they would be happy to have you—they just need a seat to open up first.

Stay Patient

I know "be patient" is easier said than done when your future is on the line. But remember: A significant number of acceptances have yet to be sent.
