Which Extracurriculars Deserve Space on Your Resume?

Most pre-law resumes look like a cluttered junk drawer of "Participation Trophies" that dilute the candidate's actual impact. You might feel the pressure to list every single organization you joined since freshman orientation, from the Intramural Dodgeball team to the "Passive Member" status in the French Club. You worry that if you don't show you are "well-rounded," you will appear one-dimensional. However, in the eyes of an Admissions Dean, a resume overflowing with low-stakes extracurriculars signals a lack of discernment. They aren't looking for someone who "shows up"; they are looking for someone who "leads up." If your involvement doesn't demonstrate a specific skill set or a commitment to your community, it is likely just taking up valuable real estate that could be used for deeper descriptions of your actual wins.

If an activity is just a line item without a story, it is a candidate for the cutting room floor. Evaluate your list using this criteria!
