👑Hi, Parents and Guardians! It's that time again, and we're talking Letters of Recommendation. If you missed the first half of this post, click here to check it out.
Below are 4 more tips on how to ensure you can help your student get the most out of their letter of recommendation.
5. Understand the Role of the Counselor:
- Counselor's Perspective: Recognize that counselor recommendations often provide a broader overview of your child's academic and personal qualities.
- School Profile: Ensure the counselor has access to your child's academic transcript, standardized test scores, and school profile.
- Meeting with Counselor: Encourage your child to schedule a meeting with their counselor to discuss their college plans and provide them with the necessary information.
6. Avoid Overstepping:
- Hands-Off Approach: While support is essential, avoid writing or dictating the content of the recommendations.
- Respect Professional Boundaries: Do not pressure recommenders to write glowing letters or exaggerate your child's achievements.
7. Double-Check Submission Processes:
- Online Portals: Ensure your child understands how to use online portals like the Common Application or Coalition Application to request and track recommendations.
- Paper Submissions: If required, help your child organize and submit paper recommendation forms.
8. Reinforce the Importance of Authenticity:
- Highlight Strengths: Encourage your child to focus on their genuine strengths and accomplishments.
- Personal Touch: Remind them that authentic and personalized recommendations are more impactful than generic ones.
