Strong recommendation letters can make a big difference in a college application!

1. Start Early and Plan Ahead:

  • Timeline Awareness: Understand college application deadlines and work backward to determine when recommendation requests should be made.
  • Junior Year Focus: Encourage your child to build strong relationships with teachers and counselors during their junior year, as these individuals are likely to write recommendations.

2. Facilitate Open Communication:

  • Student-Teacher Connection: Encourage your child to proactively engage with their teachers, participate in class, and seek extra help when needed. This helps teachers get to know them beyond their grades.
  • Parental Support (Not Interference): Offer gentle reminders and support, but avoid directly contacting teachers on your child's behalf unless absolutely necessary. The recommendations should reflect your child's initiative.

3. Provide Helpful Resources:

  • Recommendation Packets: Help your child create a "brag sheet" or recommendation packet. This should include:
    • A list of their academic achievements, extracurricular activities, and awards.
    • A personal statement or essay draft.
    • Information about the colleges they are applying to and their intended major.
    • A list of their strengths and qualities.
    • Any specific experiences or anecdotes they would like the recommender to highlight.
  • Guidance on Asking: Help your child practice how to respectfully request a letter of recommendation. Emphasize the importance of asking in person and providing ample time.

4. Respect Recommender's Time:

  • Provide Deadlines: Ensure your child provides clear deadlines to their recommenders.
  • Express Gratitude: Encourage your child to send thank-you notes to their recommenders after the letters have been submitted.
  • Waiver of Access: Make sure your child understands the importance of waiving their right to view the recommendation. Colleges value candid and honest letters.
