You are ahead of the game if you know your law school dreams as early as high school! Most importantly, please don't spread yourself too thin! Only take on a reasonable amount of other activities because your academics are number one!

Here are a few pieces of advice to help leverage your goals at this stage in your law school journey.

  • Get involved! Various high school level programs help students confirm they want to go to law school and even explore what type of law they might want to focus on in a few years. These programs also have professional legal guest speakers who may provide local connections in the legal field and could become mentors.
  • If you are eligible, please take some Advanced Placement courses! These courses are opportunities to practice your public speaking skills in front of intense students. These courses also have an immense workload that will help prepare you for the rest of your journey.
  • Try focusing on classes that grow your reading, writing, research, and communication skills, which are essential to success in law school. If you can, opt into more history, sociology, and political science classes to start engaging with a strong vocabulary. Use high school to build powerful study habits. It's always great to build hardworking habits that can transfer to college and help you obtain a strong GPA!
  • Get a job! If you can swing a part-time job, it is always a positive on a resume or application.
  • Volunteer any opportunity you can! It's good for the community and great for you to get involved.
  • Extracurricular activities: Join moot court or the debate team if it exists! Explore your interests and passions.

Don't feel limited by this advice! If you also find interest and passion in the sciences and maths, continue to pursue that. There are opportunities for you to utilize all of your diverse passions in the legal field.
