Hi Parents & Guardians!

Many students have made their college choices. Now, there's usually another big piece of the puzzle: figuring out where they're going to live. I know it can feel like another thing to do, so let's chat about some of the important stuff to make the whole housing application process a little easier for you and your student. :)

Why Housing Applications Matter:

Think of college housing as more than just a place to sleep. It's where your student will really start to build their community, buckle down for study sessions, and often make those friends they'll have for life. Getting the application done thoughtfully and on time is a crucial and important piece of the college puzzle.🧩

Things You'll Want to Chat About with Your Student:

  • Deadlines are Super Important‼️: Housing applications usually have some pretty firm deadlines. Missing them can mean fewer choices or even temporary housing. Make sure your student hunts down and notes all the important dates for each college they're going to. You can usually find this info on the college's housing or residential life website.
  • Understanding Housing Options🏘️: Some colleges offer a variety of different living arrangements – traditional dorm rooms, suites, apartments, single rooms, doubles, etc. Encourage your student to explore what's available at their college and think about what would really suit their personality and needs when it comes to privacy, socializing, and, of course, cost.
  • Theme Housing and Learning Communities✨: Some colleges offer specialized housing based on academic interests, hobbies, or shared identities. If your student is interested in these, they often require additional application steps or essays. Explore these options early if they are a good fit.
  • Roommate Preferences👀: Many applications let students say if they have a specific person they'd like to room with. Have a chat with your student about this (and make sure you both understand the college's policies on roommate requests) or if they're open to being matched with someone based on a questionnaire.
  • Personal Profiles/Questionnaires: Housing applications often ask some personal questions to help with roommate matching. Encourage your student to be honest and really think about their answers – it can make a big difference in finding a good roommate fit.😊
  • Meal Plans:🌮 Housing and meal plans often go together. Take a look at the different meal plan options and costs with your student to figure out what will work best for their appetite and your budget.
  • The Not-So-Fun Stuff: Fees and Deposits: Keep an eye out for any application fees or deposits for housing and when those payments are due.

How Parents & Guardians Can Help:

  • Encourage Proactive Action: Gently remind your student to start the application process sooner rather than later.
  • Be Their Guide, Not Their Doer: Offer support and help them find the info they need, but let them take the lead on the application itself. It's part of their journey to independence.
  • Review Together (If Needed): Offer to review their housing needs and wants before submission, especially any essays or personal statements, to catch any errors or offer suggestions.
  • Discuss Preferences and Priorities: Have open conversations about their application, helping them weigh different factors like cost, location, and amenities.
  • Help with Organization: Offer to keep track of deadlines and any required documents.
  • Be Prepared for Decisions: Sometimes housing assignments aren't exactly what your student had in mind. Help them approach the outcome with an open and flexible attitude.

Tackling those college housing applications is just another exciting step as your student gets ready for college life. By teaming up and staying organized, you'll check this step off the list in no time!
