🚨Maximizing the MBE
Here are 5 evidence-based tips and tricks for making the most of your bar prep and enhancing your performance on the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE):
1. Commit to Active Practice Every Day
- Tip: Regular, consistent practice is the single most effective way to boost your MBE score.
- Trick: Start with 30 questions a day, gradually increasing your workload as you get more comfortable. This will not only improve your knowledge of the black letter law, but it will build up your stamina so that by the time you sit for the exam, you are comfortable answering 200 questions in one day.
2. Prioritize Quality Review Over Simple Question Completion
- Tip: Reviewing your answers is as important as answering questions. Go beyond identifying the right answer—examine why each option is correct or incorrect. For each question, ask “Why is this the right answer?” and “Why are the others wrong?” This will hone your analytical skills and help you recognize subtle differences in fact patterns. Also, focus on understanding each question type rather than racing through as many questions as possible. This will ensure that once you practice a question, you will not miss any similar question that gets thrown at you on the exam.
- Trick: Create a "missed question journal" to record and analyze the patterns in your mistakes. Reviewing this journal regularly will reinforce critical concepts and reduce repeat errors. This is a great activity to do when you need to study, but you need an activity that is low-lift.
3. Practice with Timed Sets Early
- Tip: Time management is crucial on the MBE. You get less than 2 minutes to answer every question on the MBE. Get comfortable with pacing by practicing questions in timed sets from the beginning of your prep.
- Trick: Begin with short, timed sessions (10-15 questions in 18-27 minutes) and gradually increase until you’re comfortable tackling 100 questions in three hours. This builds stamina and simulates test-day conditions.
4. Emphasize the Core MBE Subjects
- Tip: Some topics appear more frequently than others on the MBE. Allocate more study time to these high-yield subjects. Additionally, a lot of your MBE performance comes down to rote memorization. Use flashcards, mnemonics, and repetition to solidify your memory of specific rules verbatim so that you can catch key differences between answers when tested.
- Trick: Track which subjects you perform best in and which need improvement. Then, allocate extra time each week to reinforce your weaker areas.
5. Stay Adaptable and Responsive to Your Progress
- Tip: Reflect on your progress weekly and be open to changing your approach. If a technique or schedule isn’t yielding results, adjust it.
- Trick: Consider periodic progress checks every 2-3 weeks. If you’re struggling with a specific question type or subject, seek additional resources or guidance from your bar coach on that area.
