How to Politely Decline an Offer

Hey Students,

With summer around the corner many of you are getting ready to start internships or other jobs. Some of you have asked “What do I do if I receive multiple offers for a job… how do I tell one no?” It’s a good problem to have.

Typically the best thing you can do is be upfront with them as soon as possible. Once you’ve determined that the role is not a good fit for you, let that employer know. Don’t wait. The employer will almost certainly have other applicants, and if they were kind enough to offer you a role make sure to decline it once you know.

When you actually decline you should just let them know and should say something like “Thank you for the offer, but after careful consideration I am pursuing another opportunity. It was a pleasure to meet you and I thank you kindly for your time.”

It’s never a fun thing to do, but it’s a good problem to have! Multiple places want you to work for them. Our best advice = don’t leave them hanging for too long. Thanks all!
