Mastering Time Management During Your Bar Prep
Creating a strong study schedule and managing your time effectively are critical for success on the bar exam. The sheer volume of material can be overwhelming, but a well-structured plan can make the process manageable. Instead of just studying for a set number of hours each day, be strategic.
Start by creating a master schedule that maps out the entire study period. Fill in the big events first—the bar exam dates, holidays, or any other major commitments. Then, work backward to block out time for each subject. It's not enough to simply allocate a day to "Torts." Break it down into specific tasks, such as "Watch lecture on intentional torts," "Complete 10 MBE questions on negligence," and "Outline a practice essay on strict liability." This level of detail will help you stay on track and prevent you from feeling lost.
As you get closer to the exam, your time management should shift from learning to practicing. Start taking timed practice exams to build your endurance and get comfortable with the time constraints. Practice is where you'll learn to pace yourself—for example, knowing that you have roughly 1.8 minutes per MBE question. Don't waste valuable time on a question you don't know; make an educated guess, flag it, and move on. The most effective use of your time is to get as many points as possible, and that means completing every section.
