What questions would you recommend your child ask in a job interview?

Job interviews are a major milestone for high schoolers, whether they are applying for a first-time summer gig or a long-term role in a trade. While we often focus on helping them answer questions, the questions they ask are just as important. It shows the employer that your student is curious, professional, and serious about the commitment.

As a former retail manager (more years back than I'll ever publicly state)😅, I’ve seen firsthand what makes a teen applicant stand out: preparation. The best candidates didn't just answer questions; they asked them. This level of engagement signals genuine interest and a proactive mindset. By equipping your teen with a few go-to questions, you help them transform a nerve-wracking interview into a two-way conversation where they can truly shine.

Recommended Questions for Students to Ask

  • "What does a typical shift look like for someone in this role?" This helps the student visualize the actual work and manage their own expectations regarding daily tasks.
  • "What qualities do your most successful employees have?" This gives the interviewer a chance to highlight the company culture and tells your student exactly what they need to do to excel.
  • "How do you handle scheduling for students who have school or extracurricular commitments?" It is better to be upfront about availability now than to run into conflicts three weeks into the job.
  • "Is there a specific training process for new hires?" This is a great way for a high schooler to see if they will be supported as they learn the ropes or if they are expected to jump right in.
  • "What is your favorite part about working here?" This builds rapport with the interviewer and can give your teen a "gut check" on the workplace environment.
