Brain Food: Spot the Flaw! 🧐

Hey everyone! Since we all need sharp analytical skills, let's try a quick Logical Reasoning challenge that doesn't require knowing any legal statutes, just logical deduction.

Read the short argument below. The conclusion is in bold. What is the logical flaw?

The Argument:

A recent survey of college students showed that 85% of those who took a standardized test preparation course reported feeling "highly confident" on test day. Only 40% of students who used self-study materials reported the same level of confidence. This clearly shows that test preparation courses are the most effective way to increase a student's score.

The Challenge:

What is the logical flaw or assumption the argument is making? (Hint: The data provided supports the confidence part, but the conclusion is about something else!)

Can you name the type of logical fallacy being used here? (Bonus points if you know the name!)

An irrelevant conclusion or Straw Man? The premise pretends to be forming an argument about one thing, but concludes another- or the conclusion itself is irrelevant based on the evidence provided.

  • @Akeda_Riley Irrelevant conclusion is spot on! But, it wouldn't be a Straw Man because that would involve misrepresenting the argument and attacking the weaker version of it, which didn't happen in this case. Great analysis!!
