OCI Prep: Mastering the Cover Letter

Hey law students!

Let's be real, cover letters can feel like a chore. But they're your first impression, your chance to show a potential employer why YOU are the one they should call for an interview.

Here's the good news: You don't have to be Shakespeare to write a killer cover letter. Here are some tips to make yours shine:

1. Ditch the Form Letter:

Seriously, nobody wants to read a generic letter that screams "mass-produced!" Tailor your cover letter to EACH firm. Research their practice areas, recent cases, and culture. Show them you're genuinely interested.

2. Beyond the Resume:

Your cover letter isn't just a rehash of your resume. It's your chance to tell a story. What experiences sparked your passion for law? What unique skills do you bring to the table? Let your personality shine through!

3. Show, Don't Just Tell:

Instead of saying "I'm a hard worker," give a concrete example. Did you pull an all-nighter to ace that legal research memo? Did you lead your moot court team to victory? Results speak volumes!

4. Keep it Concise:

Recruiters are busy people. Get to the point quickly and keep your letter to one page. Use strong action verbs and clear, concise language.

5. Proofread Like Your Life Depends on It:

Typos and grammatical errors are a HUGE red flag. Have a friend or career counselor proofread your letter before you hit send.

Bonus Tip: Don't be afraid to inject some personality! If you have a unique hobby or interest that relates to the firm or their work, mention it! It could be the thing that makes you memorable.
