Medical School Interview Prep - Your Guide To Success!

Medical schools will invite you for an interview if after reviewing your application, they find you to be a promising candidate for their class. Interviews enable schools to:
● get to know you better
● assess how you think, express yourself, and relate to others
● probe the depth of your interest in medicine and their school.
What interview formats do medical schools use?
The most common are traditional and multiple-mini interviews (MMI).
In traditional interviews, you’ll meet individually with a professor, student, and/or member of the admissions committee who’ll typically ask you questions about:
● your motivation for becoming a doctor
● your academic background and activities
● your strengths and weaknesses
● how you would handle various social or ethical scenarios
● why you’d like to attend their school.
In MMIs, you’ll proceed through several “stations” where you’ll be given a few minutes to read a scenario then several more minutes to respond to it. Some traditional interview questions might be peppered in as well.
How best to prepare?
Know as much as you can about yourself, the school, and medicine as a whole:
● Review your primary and secondary application and be ready to discuss your experiences.
● Study the school's mission and vision, curriculum, and special programs and be able to share what resonates with you.
● Prepare questions to ask your interviewer about the school.
● Brush up on core principles of medical ethics and current healthcare issues.
● For online interviews, select your outfit and test your background, lighting, and audio in advance to make sure you project a professional image and voice on screen.
● Participate in mock interviews, answering common interview questions and receiving feedback on your responses.
